Living museum in Ballarat that recreates the gold rush with interactive activities and historical demonstrations.

Sovereign Hill is a living museum recreating the history of Ballarat during the gold rush, with traditional trades, working machinery and character interpreters. After the discovery of gold in 1851, Ballarat grew from a quiet pastoral settlement to a thriving provincial town on the back of mining wealth. On the 15-hectare site, the Sovereign Hill Open Air Museum brings that era to life with a historic village and more than 18 daily activities, where you can pan for real gold, watch musket firing and see craft demonstrations such as candy, wheel and candle making.
